You’re working full-time, sometimes two jobs, children, mortgage, dog, family responsibilities, focussing on your career, but trying to find balance…

PLUS you want to start making improvements to your health & fitness? 🫠 But you’re not a robot (or an influencer whose entire identity is training & posting fitness content). So whilst you have the best intentions, your best efforts are up against a lot! What you’ve read is “ideal” probably won’t be real for you.

We need to find a way to make these changes in a way that’s realistic for you. So that they’re just in reach that you can starting ticking them off, turning actions into habits and make this a lifestyle change!

Which means setting challenging goals, whilst also being realistic! 🤟🏼✨

Here’s are 10 things that as a personal trainer, I recommend to anybody first starting out on their fitness journey.

1️⃣ Start with a lifestyle audit. What can we adjust or pair together to find room for your new “fitness actions”.  It isn’t about a drastic overnight overhaul. It’s about finding manageable, realistic ways to incorporate slightly better choices.

2️⃣ It isn’t lazy; it’s a life hack. Reframe the negative mindset around convenient, time saving and quick. You’re not being lazy or finding the easy route. You’re being efficient with your time, energy and resources! Especially when it helps you be more accountable to yourself.

3️⃣ Fitness is a part of your life, not your entire life. You’re not an athlete, paid to go to the gym or likely able to spend as much time on “fitness things” as the influencers you follow online. So any changes you make need to reflect that and fit in within your life. Also, a heads up, you probably don’t need to be doing as much as you think. What are the smallest changes you can make that have the biggest pay off?

4️⃣ This isn’t a race. You’re not competing against anybody else, so stay in your lane and focus on your journey. Try to take inspiration from others, rather than comparing their achievements & feeling disheartened by it.

Quick pause….

Little breather….

Grab some water, hydrate….

5️⃣ You don’t have to love the gym. But in order to start making improvements or create momentum, you’ll likely need to prioritise things like nutrition, movement, training and sleep. It shouldn’t consume your life, but the actions you have currently won’t take you to the person you’re looking to become. Remember that. It’s important.

6️⃣Your progress is progress. Regardless of what other people are doing, posting about or shouting loudly about. Goals you set, targets you hit, concerns you have, are all valid.

7️⃣You’ll need to be flexible and open to things not going right. This is when having a coach can help; but allowing yourself permission to f**k up, learn from and readjust going forward. Rigid things break; being able to be adaptable serves you in the long run!

8️⃣ Find things you enjoy. Because fitness and wellness is a lifestyle commitment to yourself. There will be things you don’t love doing, but at least find stuff within your week that you enjoy, gets you out of bed or makes you feel passionate.

9️⃣ You’re allowed to change your mind. Like a fine wine or cheese, your values and goals are allowed to mature. Just make sure you allow something long enough before jumping ship for the new shinier option.

🔟 Meet yourself where you’re at. You’re first starting out so give yourself grace. You don’t need to know it all. Allow yourself permission to be a beginner without feeling ashamed (embrace those newbie gainsssss 💪)

So in summary, possibly the most important thing you need to focus on in this minefield of knowledge?

You.
