Only The Disciplined Succeed?

Writer: Adele MeadeAdele Meade

When you think of a person who’s disciplined, who comes to mind?

David Goggins? CEOS of a hugely successful company? Serena Williams? Someone preparing for a huge event? Someone following a restrictive diet?

Maybe you thought of yourself?

In the fitness industry, “discipline” is met with mixed emotions. The “Rise and Grind”, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead’, “Only The Dedicated” crowd. Some people wear it like a badge of honour and use it as bragging rights. Challenges like 75 hard encourage you to be disciplined and go ALL IN.

Which gives it a bad rap amongst a lot of people.

BUT WHAT IS DISCIPLINE?

Let’s start with what it isn’t just…

❌ 25 min ice baths, 4am routines

❌ Bragging rights to one up others

❌ Striving to be perfect

❌ All or nothing mindset

❌ Strict diets, regime, restriction and punishment

So if these are what it isn’t…what can being disciplined look like?

✅ The drive to keep showing up for yourself

✅ Having self-respect and accountability

✅ A promise to yourself to do an action

✅ Making conscious decisions even when you don’t feel like it/can’t be bothered

✅ Determination to act inline with your goals and standards

It doesn’t mean you have to strive to be perfect. Or that anything “less than”, isn’t worthwhile. Having self discipline in your day to day, doesn’t mean you have to sign your life away to the gym, start strict diets or punish yourself with things you hate.

Discipline doesn’t have to be an intimidating, negative thing. It isn’t a scary word that we can’t aspire for. Discipline and self respect are basically the same thing. They’re really strong personal motivators, because it’s a promise to yourself. And we know the intention and meaning behind that word. It’s coming from a place of self respect and self worth.

You can be disciplined, without losing sense of also being mindful, compassionate and self-aware 💕
